Planning granted for New Royal podium entrance

Planning permission has been granted for the ‘podium’ entrance to new Royal University Hospital north elevation to enhance pedestrian and vehicle access to building.

Our build partner Laing O’Rourke is on site creating the foundations for the steel structure which will commence early next year and is expected to complete in Summer 2022.

Originally in the long-term site masterplan, the podium entrance is accessed off Prescot Street and via Mount Vernon Street to facilitate airport style drop off and pick up points. It will provide vehicular and pedestrian access to short stay drop off points and disabled parking close to the north side main entrances.

Sir David Dalton, Interim Chief Executive at Liverpool University Hospital Foundation Trust (LUHFT), explains: “Patients are at the heart of the new Royal design and we are always looking for opportunities to improve their experience while we care for them.

“The podium will enable us to improve how patients arrive and how they access the hospital. We are delighted to have secured permission from Liverpool City Council to move onto constructing this new entrance.”

Bringing forward the podium entrance reflects the increased footfall and traffic to the area as Clatterbridge Cancer Centre is now open and significant progress has been made on the development of the Knowledge Quarter.

The new hospital will be handed over in Spring next year and with plans to move in during late Summer 2022.

The hospital is part of the government's commitment to deliver 48 hospitals by 2030, the biggest hospital building programme in a generation.
